    1. medicine.
      The removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus before it is sufficiently developed to survive independently, deliberately induced by the use of drugs or by surgical procedures. Also called termination or induced abortion.
    2. medicine.
      The spontaneous expulsion of an embryo or fetus from the uterus before it is sufficiently developed to survive independently. Also called miscarriage, spontaneous abortion.
    3. The failure of a plan, project, etc.
    4. Anything which has failed to grow properly or enough.
