    1. Any of various herbaceous plants, especially monkshood or wolfsbane, which has hooded bluish-purple flowers, and roots containing a toxic alkaloid compound formerly used to poison wolves.
    2. The narcotic analgesic drug obtained from the roots of this plant, now generally regarded as too toxic for medicinal applications.
Etymology: 16c: from Latin aconitum.
