    1. phonetics.
      The loss of pronunciation of the final sound or sounds of a word, either because they are weakly stressed, eg the gradual disappearance of the inflected endings in English, or for reasons of economy in colloquial speech, eg television becomes telly, or to shorten longish forenames, eg Patricia becomes Pat.
Etymology: 16c: from Greek apokoptein to cut off.
