    1. A tropical perennial plant cultivated in tropical regions for its swollen underground tubers, which produce a highly digestible form of starch.
    2. The fine-grained starch obtained from the tubers of this plant, used as a food thickener.
    3. Any similar starch obtained from the tubers or roots of other plants.
Etymology: 17c: named after its former use by S American Indians to treat wounds made by poisoned arrows.
