    1. A band or tape, often made from threads of gold and silver twisted together, used as a decoration on uniforms, etc.
    (now chiefly N Amer)
    2. A ropelike length of interwoven hair, consisting usually of three separate lengths which have been twisted together. Brit equivalent plait.

    1. To twist (several lengths of thread or hair, etc) together, placing one over the other in a regular sequence.
