bogey2
noun bogeys
- 1. A score of one over par on a specific hole.
2. formerly
- The number of strokes that a competent golfer might expect to take for a given hole or course.
Etymology: 19c: in 1890 a Major Wellman is said to have remarked that the hypothetical golfer able to play to this standard must be a regular ‘Bogey Man' (referring to a popular song of the time); thereafter this imaginary player came to be called Colonel Bogey and golfers would aim to ‘beat the Colonel' or ‘beat the Bogey'; see bogeyman.
