    1. A surgical operation in which a baby is delivered through an incision in the lower abdomen, usually performed when normal delivery through the vagina would place the mother or baby at risk.
Etymology: 17c: apparently named after Julius Caesar, who was said to have been the first child to be delivered by this method.
