    1. An evergreen tree, native to tropical S America, which has clusters of lance-shaped leaves, bell-shaped flowers that are borne directly on the trunk and branches, and flask-shaped woody fruits. Also called bottle gourd.

    2. A trailing or climbing vine, native to warm regions of the Old World, which has white flowers and woody bottle-shaped fruits.
    3. The dried hollowed-out shell of one of these fruits used as a bowl or water container.
Etymology: 17c: from French calebasse.
