    1. A thickened hardened pad of skin which develops on parts of the body that are subjected to constant friction or pressure, such as the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
    2. A mass of tissue, consisting of large thin-walled cells, that forms around a wound on the surface of a plant.
    3. A mass of blood and connective tissue that forms around the exposed ends of a fractured bone as an important part of the healing process.
