    1. A period of public festivity with eg street processions, colourful costumes, singing and dancing.

    2. A circus or fair.
    3. The period just before Lent, marked by revelry and feasting.
Etymology: 16c: from Italian carnevale, from Latin carnelevarium, probably from caro flesh + levare to remove, the original carnival being Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of the Lent fast.
