    1. An evergreen tree, native to the Mediterranean region, which produces large reddish-brown seedpods rich in sugars and gums. Also called locust tree.
    2. The edible seedpod of this tree, ground and used as a substitute for chocolate and as a food stabilizer, or as a feed for animal livestock.
Etymology: 16c: from French carobe, from Arabic kharrub.
