    1. A perennial shrubby plant native to Brazil, but cultivated throughout the tropics for its fleshy tuberous edible roots. Also called manioc.
    2. A starchy substance obtained from the root of this plant, and used to make cassava flour, bread, tapioca, laundry starch, etc.
Etymology: 16c: from Spanish cazabe, from Taino (a West Indies Native American language) caçabi.
