      (symbol Cl, atomic number 17) a greenish-yellow poisonous gas with a pungent smell, obtained from deposits of sodium chloride or potassium chloride, and from sea water, widely used as a disinfectant and bleach, and in the chemical industry.
Etymology: 19c: chlor- + -ine2; named by Sir Humphrey Davy, because of its colour.
