A solid, three-dimensional figure with a flat base in the shape of a circle or ellipse, and a curved upper surface that tapers to a fixed point.
2. Something similar to this in shape, eg a hollow pointed wafer for holding ice cream.
3. anatomy.
In the retina: a type of light-sensitive receptor cell specialized for the detection of colour, and which functions best in bright light. Compare rod noun 6.
4. bot.
The reproductive structure of gymnosperms, consisting of a central axis bearing many overlapping sporophylls. Technical equivalent strobilus.
5. A plastic cone-shaped bollard which is placed on the road temporarily, to divert traffic, cordon off an area, etc. Also called traffic cone.
