    1. geom.
      A solid, three-dimensional figure with a flat base in the shape of a circle or ellipse, and a curved upper surface that tapers to a fixed point.
    2. Something similar to this in shape, eg a hollow pointed wafer for holding ice cream.
    3. anatomy.
      In the retina: a type of light-sensitive receptor cell specialized for the detection of colour, and which functions best in bright light. Compare rod noun 6.
    4. bot.5. A plastic cone-shaped bollard which is placed on the road temporarily, to divert traffic, cordon off an area, etc. Also called traffic cone.

Etymology: 16c: from Greek konos pine cone or geometrical cone.

Phrasal Verb: cone something or somewhere off
    To close off (an area or part of a road) with a line of traffic cones.
