    1. A game played on a lawn, in which the players use mallets to drive wooden balls through a sequence of hoops in a particular order, to try to be first to reach and hit a central peg.

    1. To drive away a ball by placing it in contact with one's own and striking both with the mallet.
Etymology: 19c: apparently French, diminutive of croc hook.
