    1. A painful and sometimes fatal disorder that occurs when a person who has been breathing air under high pressure returns too suddenly to normal atmospheric pressure, causing nitrogen dissolved in the bloodstream to come out of solution and form bubbles that hinder or even block the circulation. Also called the bends, caisson disease.
