    1. The process of differentiating.
    2. math.
      A method used in calculus to calculate the rate of change of one variable quantity produced by changes in a related variable, by finding the derivative of a function (noun 4). Compare integration.
    3. biol.
      The process whereby unspecialized precursor cells or tissues develop into cells or tissues that have a highly specialized structure and function, eg the development of embryonic tissue into muscle cells, neurones, etc.
    4. A change by which what is generalized or homogeneous becomes specialized or heterogeneous.
