    1. A unit that is used to express the power of a lens, defined as one divided by the focal length of the lens, when the focal length is measured in metres, having a positive value for a converging lens and a negative value for a diverging lens.
Etymology: 19c in this sense; 16c as the name of an optical instrument: from Greek dioptron spyglass.
