    1. The act of dividing; the state of being divided.

      The process of determining how many times one number, the divisor, is contained in another, the dividend.

    7. bot.
      In taxonomy: any of the major groups, eg Bryophyta (the mosses and liverworts), into which the plant kingdom (sense 2) is divided and which in turn is subdivided into one or more classes (sense 9). It corresponds to the phylum in the animal kingdom.
