- 1. The economic association formed (by the Treaty of Rome in 1957) by France, W Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. In 1973 it extended to include the United Kingdom, Denmark and the Republic of Ireland, in 1981 Greece, and in 1986 Spain and Portugal. Also (informal) called the Common Market. Now officially renamed European Community.
