      (formula HCOOH) a colourless pungent liquid that is toxic and corrosive, and is largely responsible for the stinging sensation produced by ant bites and stinging nettles. It is also used in the dyeing of textiles, and as a fumigant and insecticide. Also called methanoic acid.
Etymology: 18c: from Latin formica ant.
