- 1. A large metal tank, the top section of which can move freely up and down, used for storing coal gas or natural gas before it is distributed to customers. Also called gas holder.
2. Any container that is used for holding and measuring gas, especially for the purpose of chemical analysis, eg to measure the volume of gas evolved during a chemical reaction.
