noun
    1. medicine.
      An intestinal infection caused by ingesting a flagellate protozoan, usually from water that contains the faeces of infected animals. The symptoms are prolonged diarrhoea and abdominal pain.
Etymology: Early 20c: named after A Giard (died 1908), the French biologist who identified the protozoan that causes the infection.
