    1. bot.
      Any member of a division of plants that includes the conifers and cycads. They produce seeds that are usually borne on the surface of overlapping scale-like leaves in cones. Compare angiosperm.
Etymology: 19c: from Latin gymnospermus, from Greek gymnos naked + sperma seed, because the seeds are not enclosed in any ovary.
