    1. A stone or gem which has a design engraved in its surface. Compare cameo (sense 1).
    2a. The art or process of engraving designs into the surface of objects, especially jewellery;
    2b. An engraved design.
    3. In printmaking: a technique in which a design is incised into a metal plate, ink is forced into the cut lines and wiped off the rest of the surface, damp paper is laid on top and both plate and paper are rolled through a press.
Etymology: 17c: Italian, from intagliare to cut into.
