    1. A tropical fever, confined to the dry regions of NE Africa and S Asia which, if untreated, is often fatal. It is characterized by fever, acute anaemia and enlargement of the spleen and liver, caused by a parasite which is usually transmitted by sandfly bites. Compare leishmaniasis.
Etymology: 19c: Assamese kala black + azar disease.
