      A soft whitish powdery deposit containing silica and composed mainly of the remains of cell walls of diatoms, used as an abrasive, filler and insulator, and as an absorbent material in dynamite. Also called diatomite.
Etymology: 19c: German, from Kiesel flint + Guhr fermentation.
