1. An oval edible fruit with pale-green juicy flesh studded with small hard black seeds and enclosed by a brown hairy skin, produced by a climbing plant native to China. Also called Chinese gooseberry.

Etymology: 1960s: so called because the fruit was exported to Europe, etc from New Zealand.
