    1. pathol.
      An infection common in tropical and subtropical regions, caused by a parasitic protozoan which is transmitted by sandflies.
Etymology: Early 20c: named after the Scots bacteriologist, Sir William Leishman (1865‐1926), who discovered the cure for the fever form of the disease, kala-azar.
