- Any reference or locational circle lying parallel to the north or south of the equator, defined in terms of the number of degrees any given line is from the equator. The measurement increases slightly irregularly (because the Earth is not a perfect sphere) towards the two poles where it becomes 90°. See latitude. Compare line of longitude.
