    1. A rock in the river Rhine famous for its echo.
    2a. In German legend: a beautiful woman who drowned herself in the river Rhine after discovering her lover had been unfaithful and who was afterwards believed to sit on the Lorelei rock, luring sailors to their death by her singing;
    2b. Any woman who is considered to exert a powerful attraction over men, especially when it results in their downfall. See also siren, femme fatale.
Etymology: 19c: sense 2 is from the novel Godwi (1800-1802) by Clemens Brentano (1778-1842).
