    1. A road-making material consisting of layers of compacted broken stones, usually bound with tar.
    2. A road surface made with this. Compare blacktop, tarmac, tarmacadam. See also asphalt, bitumen.
Etymology: 19c: named after its inventor, the Scottish engineer John McAdam (1756‐1836).
