      An ancient Egyptian tomb built of brick or stone with sloping sides and a flat roof, having an outer area in which offerings were made, connected to a secret inner room from which a shaft led to an underground burial chamber.
Etymology: 17c in original sense ‘a stone bench or seat': from Arabic mastabah bench.
