      Two galaxies visible in the southern hemisphere, the nearest galaxies to the Earth, that appear to the naked eye as though they were detached portions of the Milky Way.
Etymology: 17c: named after the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan (c.1480‐1521), who first recorded them.
