    1. Colourfully glazed or enamelled earthenware, as produced in Italy from the 14c, and especially that of the early 16c decorated with scenes in the Renaissance style. Sometimes called majolicaware.
Etymology: 16c: Italian maiolica, from Latin Majorica Majorca, from where it was first imported and is thought to have been made originally by Moorish craftsmen.
