    1. math.
      A square or rectangular arrangement of symbols or numbers, in rows or columns, used to summarize relationships between different quantities, etc.
    2. biol.
      In tissues such as bone and cartilage: the substance in which cells are embedded.

      The tissue lying beneath the body and root of a fingernail or toenail, and from which it develops.
    4. geol.
      The rock in which a mineral or fossil is embedded.
