Mercator's projection
Mercator's map projection
Mercator projection
noun
    1. map-making.geog.
A representation of the surface of the globe in which the meridians are parallel straight lines, and the parallels of latitude are straight lines at right angles to these. This gives a true representation of shape but not of area, and makes the regions towards the poles exaggerated in size. Compare Peters' projection.
Etymology: 17c: from Gerhardus Mercator, the Latin version of the name of the Flemish-born German cartographer Gerhard Kremer (1512‐94).
