    1. A globe-shaped cactus of Mexico and the SW USA, with buttonlike tubercles (called mescal buttons) on its stems which have an intoxicating and hallucinogenic effect when chewed or made into an infusion and drunk. Also called peyote.
    2. A colourless Mexican spirit made from the sap of this and certain other plants.
Etymology: 18c: from Aztec mexcalli.
