madam
noun mesdames (plural in sense 1), madams (plural in other senses)
    1. A polite form of address to any woman, especially a married or elderly woman or any female customer in a shop, etc, used instead of a name. Equivalent to sir for a man. Compare miss2 1.
    2. A form of address to a woman in authority, often prefixed to an official title.
      Example: Madam Chairman
    3. A woman who manages a brothel.
    (especially Brit)
    4. colloq
      An arrogant or spoiled girl or young woman
      Example: Cheeky little madam!
Etymology: 13c (see Madame); 20c in sense 3.

    1. A title equivalent to Mrs, used especially of a French or French-speaking woman, usually a married one. Compare Mademoiselle.
Etymology: 17c in this sense; 13c in same sense as madam 1: French, originally two words ma my + dame lady.
