    1. linguistics.
      Alteration of the normal order of sounds or letters in a word, eg the word ‘girn' (see girner) is an instance of r-metathesis, where the ‘i' and the ‘r' of ‘grin' have swapped places.
Etymology: 17c: from Greek meta- + thesis.
