    1. zool.
      An animal, such as the echidna or the duck-billed platypus, that differ from other mammals in having a single opening, the cloaca, that serves for the passing of both urine and faeces. In females, this same opening is used for egg-laying and the receiving of sperm.
Etymology: 19c: from Latin Monotremata, from Greek trematus holed.
