    1. A highly-addictive, narcotic drug obtained from opium, used medicinally as an analgesic to relieve severe and persistent pain, and as a sedative to induce sleep. Also called (especially formerly) morphia. See also codeine, heroin.
Etymology: 19c: from German Morphin, from Greek Morpheus, the name of the god of sleep.
