    1. building.
      A mixture of sand, water and cement or lime, used to bond bricks or stones.
    2. The small heavy dish in which substances are ground with a pestle.
    3. A type of short-barrelled artillery gun for firing shells over short distances.
verb mortared, mortaring
    1. To fix something (especially bricks) in place with mortar.
    2. To plaster (eg a wall) with mortar.
    3. To bombard (a place or target, etc) using a mortar.
Etymology: 13c: from French mortier, from Latin mortarium.
