multiple sclerosis Definition

1. A progressive disease of the central nervous system caused by degeneration of the myelin sheath that encloses the neurones in the brain and spinal cord, producing symptoms such as inability to coordinate movements, weakness of the muscles, speech difficulties, blurring of vision and an abnormal tingling sensation. Formerly called disseminated sclerosis.
