    1. A marine bivalve mollusc, especially the common or edible mussel, that has a bluish-black shell and uses a mass of tough threads to anchor itself to rocks, etc.
    2. A similar freshwater bivalve mollusc which forms mother-of-pearl on the inside of its shell.
Etymology: Anglo-Saxon muscle or musle: from Latin musculus, diminutive of mus mouse.
