    1. A perennial plant belonging to the family Orchidaceae, one of the largest families of flowering plants, containing about 30000 species. Orchids are best known for their complex and exotic flowers, and for their highly sophisticated pollination mechanisms.
Etymology: 19c: from Greek orchis testicle, so called because of the shape of its root-tubers.
