    1. The countries in the east, especially those of E Asia regarded as culturally distinct from western countries (the Occident).

      The part of the sky where the Sun rises. Compare occident.

    1. To place something in a definite position in relation to the points of the compass or some other fixed or known point.
    2. To acquaint (oneself or someone) with one's position or their position relative to points known, or relative to the details of a situation.
