    1. art.
      An imprecise term used to describe the more progressive forms of painting since c.1880, which developed as a reaction against Impressionism and Neo-impressionism, with the aim of conveying the essence of their subjects through a simplification of form and developing the Impressionist style far beyond the merely representational.
Etymology: Early 20c: coined by the art critic Roger Fry (1866‐1934).
