    1. An annual climbing plant of the pulse family, cultivated in cool temperate regions for its edible seeds, which are produced in long dehiscent pods.
    2. The round protein-rich seed of this plant, which can be eaten fresh, or preserved by freezing, canning or drying. See also split peas.
Etymology: 17c: a singular form of pease, which was spelt peas and mistaken for a plural.
