    1. Any of various species of ground-dwelling bird, the males of which are usually brightly coloured and have long pointed tails.
    2. The common or ringed pheasant, a popular gamebird, the male of which has coppery plumage, with a dark-green head and neck, and red wattles around its eyes.
Etymology: 13c: from French fesan, from Greek phasianos ornis bird of the Phasis, ie the river in Asia Minor.
